Walker Metalsmith's Celtic Caring Cross Pendants Honor Frontline Healthcare Professionals

Here at Walker Metalsmiths, we use our time-honored craft to create custom Celtic jewelry, which is appropriate for a variety of occasions. That is why we were inspired to create our Celtic Caring Cross Pendants, to honor frontline healthcare professionals with the symbol of the Celtic Cross. During these trying and uncertain times, healthcare professionals have been the true heroes on the frontlines of the battle against the pandemic, and we wanted to create a piece that was specifically designed for these saviors.

The Celtic Cross: A Rich History

The Celtic Cross has a rich history, which is as intriguing as it is ambiguous. Walker Metalsmiths custom Caring Cross PendantWalker Metalsmiths has been studying and crafting jewelry using the imagery of the Celtic Cross for decades. What we know is that the Celtic Cross has many variations of interpretations and legends about the original meaning. Irish Catholic priests will likely tell you the cross invokes a symbol of eternity and endless love, while there are legends involving St. Patrick and a sacred stone.

For certain, we do know that in general, the cross itself became a common symbol in Christianity in the 4th century, and in Britain, there are stone monuments which may be an early ancestor to the Celtic Cross we know today. While the exact lineage of this symbol is still mysterious, what we know is that the Celtic Cross today is celebrated by various faiths, and is also a celebration of Irish, Welsh, and Scottish identity.

The Caring Cross: Integrating the Caduceus

Our handcrafted Celtic Cross was created with caregivers and healthcare professionals in mind, and for that reason, we decided to integrate the symbol of the caduceus. It’s likely you’ve seen this symbol many times in your life, as it is used in many forms by medical institutions and professionals. The history of this symbol is also rich and wayward, and it dates back to 1400 B.C.

The caduceus symbol features two serpents intertwined around a pole. Historians believe this draws from biblical stories, and that serpents are also used because the shedding of their skin represents longevity and immortality. The snakes are viewed as a healing symbol, and on the caduceus, are backed by wings.

An Original Design For Those On The Frontlines

Since the 1980’s, the family behind Walker Metalsmiths has been using their craft to create custom pieces that channel ancient traditions. In the challenges of these modern times, the Celtic Caring Cross was created as a humble homage to those playing a massive role in caring for others. Aside from the Celtic Cross and the caduceus, this piece also includes the imagery of a stethoscope.

We offer the Celtic Caring cross in a small and a large size, and there is also an option for a plain cross design. This Celtic necklace is available in both gold and silver, and additionally, we can adorn it with a birthstone.
