Saint Columba Medal

St Columba Medal, carved on both sides.

Shown on a Medium Rolo Chain.

The medal depicts St. Columba or in Gaelic Colum Cille meaning "Dove of the Church".  The heron recalls an allegorical legend of his exile from Ireland to the Scottish Isle of Iona in 563 AD .  The cross on the back is in the shape of a stone referred to as St Columba's Pillow.  St. Columba founded monasteries at Durrow, Derry, Kells and Swords in Ireland and used his monastery on Iona as a base for converting the pagan Picts to Christianity.
